Biophysical controls of marsh soil shear strength along an estuarine salinity gradient

چکیده

Abstract. Sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, and wave erosion threaten coastal marshes, but the influence of salinity on marsh erodibility remains poorly understood. We measured shear strength soils along a biodiversity gradient in York River estuary Virginia to assess direct indirect impacts potential erodibility. found that soil was higher monospecific salt marshes (5–36 kPa) than biodiverse freshwater (4–8 kPa), likely driven by differences belowground biomass. However, we also at edge controlled sediment characteristics, rather vegetation or salinity, suggesting inherent relationships may be obscured more dynamic environments. Our results indicate are weaker soils, suggest salinization these lead simultaneous losses

Long-term patterns of an estuarine pathogen along a salinity gradient

Parasitic, disease-causing pathogens can exert strong control over marine populations yet few long-term studies exist that describe these relationships. Understanding the connections to longterm large-scale processes relative to local short-term processes should facilitate better planning for disease impacts in the management of marine resources. We describe a 21-yr dataset of dermo disease (Pe...

Microbial biogeography along an estuarine salinity gradient: combined influences of bacterial growth and residence time.

Shifts in bacterioplankton community composition along the salinity gradient of the Parker River estuary and Plum Island Sound, in northeastern Massachusetts, were related to residence time and bacterial community doubling time in spring, summer, and fall seasons. Bacterial community composition was characterized with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S ribosomal...

Changes in phosphorus biogeochemistry along an estuarine salinity gradient: The iron conveyer belt

We used sequential extractions to quantify different forms of particulate phosphorus (PP) in sediments along the salinity gradient of the Patuxent River estuary. About 50–90% of the PP was phosphate bound to iron oxides (Fe-P), and 8–30% was organic P (org-P). Loosely sorbed phosphate (sorb-P), detrital apatite, and authigenic plus biogenic apatite each made up ,10% of the PP. Suspended sedimen...

Archaeal diversity along a soil salinity gradient prone to disturbance.

We employed a cultivation-independent approach to examine archaeal diversity along a transient soil salinity gradient at Salt Spring in British Columbia, Canada that is routinely eroded due to heavy, recurrent rainfall. Archaeal 16S rRNA gene libraries were created using DNA extracted from three soil samples collected along this gradient. Statistical comparisons indicated similar archaeal richn...
